Female The features of the design of the female's head include the black stripe on the crown and the white line along the face, which continues down along the neck and until mantle. It is also shown the zygodactylous feet disposition with the third digit pointing to the exterior and not backwards as usual in other species. This particularity of picids, together with the support of the hard tail, give this birds a great grip in the vertical trunk while moving or feeding. Finally, the bird shows the most frecuent feeding technique, making small drillings on the bark and extracting prey with the long tongue from the interior of the trunk.
