Size: Between 7,5 cm (Bar-breasted Piculet, Picumnus aurifrons) and 60 cm (Imperial Woodpecker, Campephilus imperialis).

Distribution: All continents, salving Australia. Excepting few cases, they are sedentary and only young birds perform dispersive movements.

Habitat: Different kinds of forestal habitats or their proximities.

Feeding: Mainly insects and their larvae, as well as other arthropodes. Some species feed on fruits, seeds and sap. If they have occasion, they predate other birds' nests.

Breeding: The nest is a hole in a trunk, salving few exceptions which excavate it on the ground, in a termite mound or in any other soft surface. Monogamous. 2-10 eggs. Incubation 9-14 days. Nestling period 3-4 weeks.
