Juvenile Large and chubby. Black bill, shorter than other Calidris. Pale underparts with dirty flanks and breast. Grey, strongly scaled upperparts. Pale, thick superciliary line. The winter plumage is very similar, lacking the scaled aspect of back. The breeding adult is very different, with red underparts and a mixture of grey and orange on upperparts.
