Endemic to Costa Rica and Panama. The red and yellow bill separates it from the other Pteroglossus of Costa Rica, the Collared Aracari. It is a small and agile Toucan. Black upperparts with red rump. Yellow underparts with a black mark in the center of breast and a red band between breast and vent. White line on the base of the bill. Juveniles lack this line, the black breast mark is little defined and the red band is tinged of black.
