Order Piciformes 40 species in 6 genera
Size: Between 30 cm (Emerald Toucanet, Aulacorhynchus prasinus) and 61 cm (Toco Toucan, Ramphastos toco).
Distribution: Neotropical region. Sedentary, performing local and dispersive movements.
Habitat: Low altitude tropical forests, excepting the Toco Toucan (Ramphastos toco), which inhabits open lands, forest limits and savannas.
Feeding: Frugivorous. Nectar and flowers also included in the diet. They can predate other birds' nests, as icterids and tyranids.
Breeding: Natural hollows in trees or large picids' nests. Monogamous. 1-5 white eggs. Incubation 15-18 days. Nestling period 40-60 days. Sexual maturity 1-4 years, depending on the species.
Threat status: 5 threatened species (2 Endangered and 3 Vulnerable). [+info] |
