Size: Between 5 cm (Bee Hummingbird, Mellisuga helenae) and 22 cm (Giant Hummingbird, Patagona gigas).
Distribution: Nearctic and Neotropical Regions. Mostly sedentary, very few migratory species and some of them perform post-reproductive dispersions.
Habitat: All type of habitats where flowers with nectar grow.
Feeding: Mainly nectar. They can include insects in the diet, in a small proportion.
Breeding: Small open cup on a branch or fork (subfamily Trochilinae) or hanged with spider's web from the underside of a leaf (subfamily Phaethornithinae). 2 eggs. Incubation 14-24 days. Nestling period 18-41 days.
