Brown-grey general plumage, with scaled mantle and breast. White neck and black to dark brown cap. Robust bill, pale coloured and with a red, very extense cere. Juvenile is separated easily by its brown plumage, lacking scaled aspect on mantle and breast, brown neck, little marked cap and pale pink cere.
