Geographical variation
Here are shown two of the 12 recognized subspecies. The ones filmed in Costa Rica belong to petulans and the ones from Brazil, to saturatus. This species has a great plumage variety, tending more to grey, brown or chestnut. Race petulans tends to pale grey on upperparts and head, being saturatus more brown on back.
