Adult Grey upperparts, brownish on mantle and silver on wings, pinkish underparts. Broad black semicollar on nape. Black under side of tail, with a wide white terminal band. In Botswana, almos identical to S. decipiens, differing mainly on head. S. semitorquata has it very pale, with red eye and eyering, while S. decipiens has grey head with red eye and yellow eyering. No sexual dimorphism.
