Female Species characterized by its bill, strongly adapted to feed on nectar, perforating the base of flowers and extracting it with the brush-shaped tongue. Upturned lower mandible and hooked upper one. The male is blueish, paler on vent. Females are brown, paler on underparts, with streaked breast and chestnut infracaudal region.
