Endemic to Costa Rica and Panama. Rufous upperparts and black and white barred underparts. Red iris. Juveniles have dull iris, less rufous upperparts and dirty barred underparts. Similar to T. thoracicus and T. rufalbus, but the first one has no rufous on upperparts and the second one has no barred underparts.
