Brown head and neck, with a pale ochre superciliary line. White underparts with a strong black spotting. Ochre borders of feathers on upperparts, black scapulars with white, V-shape borders. The breeding adult has an intense, broad, black mark on the white vent, white breast and head with black streaks, chestnut crown and white superciliary line. Chestnut upperparts, of variable intensity depending on the subspecies. Winter plumage is very dull, uniformly grey on upperparts and white on underparts.
