Breeding male Blue and black breeding plumage, with brilliant crown, red legs, long and decurved bill. Intense yellow underwing. In Costa Rica, it can be confused with C.lucidus, which is also completely blue, but the red on legs is enough to separate them. In non breeding season, it moults to a female-like plumage, but with very black wings and tail.
