Movement technique This female shows the typical way of movemente of the picids in a vertical trunk. The hardness of the rectrices allows the tail to support the bird's weight and to push it up when climbing. Differently to other birds with zygodactylous feet, picids don't displace the third digit backward, but pointing to the exterior of the foot, which gives a better grip, specially when hammering the trunk.
