Non breeding plumage
Both subspecies are alike in non breeding plumage, with yellow bill. However, in egretta the bill doesn't change into black during breeding, remaining always yellow. Breeding individuals are distinguishable by the development of ornamental tufts of feathers on the body and by the greenish pigmentation of the lores.
