Distribution: All the continents. The species of tropical latitudes tend to be sedentary, while the ones of temperate areas are, generally, migratory.
Habitat: Fresh and coastal wetlands
Feeding: Vegetables, fish, molluscs, crustaceans and insects.
Breeding: Generally, accumulations of vegetation on the ground, also in cavities and cliffs. 4-14 eggs. Incubation 21-44 days. Nestling period 28-110 days.
