Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis)
Linnaeus, 1766. 5 subspecies recognized, here are shown occidentalis (Costa Rica) and urinator (Galapagos Islands).
Breeding plumage The white on head separates it easily from juveniles. There is no sexual dimorphism, but there is a change of plumage in breeding adults, which have dark brown nape and posterior side of neck, forming a very contrasted white line in both sides of neck.
