Male Completely black head, with blue eyering, rest of the plumage orangish salving the black wings. Very long tail, but not as much as other Terpsiphone. Another species of the same genus in The Gambia, T. viridis viridis, quickly separated by the completely black underparts and abundant white on wing. Both of them hybridize, generating intermediate individuals.
