In hand Robust alaudid with very strong bill. Characteristic, very visible, black mark in both sides of breast, which almost joins in the center, giving often a collar aspect. In flight, dark wing with very visible white border. White external rectrices. The Greater Short-toed Lark (Calandrella brachydactyla), of a notable smaller size, also shows the black marks on sides of breast, but much weaker.
