Male
Unique Picumnus in Costa Rica, unmistakable with any other picid because of the small size (10 cm), short bill and tail, which give it a chubby aspect. Greenish brown general coloration, paler on vent. White spotted black crown and nape. The male has red forehead, baing black on females.
