Adult Very different bill from the rest of herons, extremely wide and flat, which makes it unmistakable. The dark cap forms a prominent crest on nape, lacking on young individuals. General coloration is clean, with no streaks and with very contrasted dark areas: crown, flanks and upper mantle.
