Adult More compact aspact than other ardeids and relatively short bill. Dark bluish grey back and crown, pale grey wings and white underparts. Bright red iris. Dark bill, only pale on the base and, sometimes, on the lower mandible. Greenish yellow legs. Ornamental white occipital plumes.
