Lapwing with long legs, with a characteristic yellow wattle hanging from the base of the bill. White crown stripe, with a red mark on forehead. Strongly black and white streaked throat. Yellow legs. Juvenile differs on the absence of wattles. Of the five Vanellus in The Gambia and Senegal, only similar to V. albiceps, which also has yellow wattles, but with whole white underparts and grey head.
