Usually placed in the Troglodytidae, the latest Clements taxonomy separates it in an own family. The general aspect is wren-like, but much heavy-built and long tailed. Dark brown upperparts and yellow underparts, yellow iris and white panel on primaries. Breeding adults have an orange mark in the posterior part of the malar region. Black long tail with white outer rectrices and tips of inner ones. No sexual dimorphism. Juveniles resemble adults, but duller and with a white line behind the eye.
