Adult Subfamily Balearicinae is formed by two species of Crowned Cranes, almost identical but geographically separated. B. regulorum occurs in south Africa and B. pavonina in the center-north. The plumage pattern in both is very similar: predominantly grey, with very stricking wings, white in all the coverts, black in primaries and chestnut in secondaries. Group of yellow coverts in the inner wing, very visible when it is closed. The head has a large crest, wide white area on cheeks and red wattle. B. pavonina has a darker grey and shows red on cheeks.
