Distribution: All the continents. The family contents sedentary and migratory species, there's no general pattern.

Habitat: Mainly coasts, but they also occupy interior wetlands, even urban areas.

Feeding: Varied diet; vegetables, fish, invertebrates. Some species hunt other birds or mammals.

Breeding: Vegetal platform on the ground, cliffs or trees. 2-3 eggs. Incubation around 25 days. Nestling period 1-2 weeks.
