Size: Between 40 cm (Eurasian Oystercatcher, Haematopus ostralegus) and 51 cm (Australian Pied Oystercatcher, Haematopus longirostris).

Distribution: All biogeographic regions, excepting Antarctica. Only one migratory species (H. ostralegus).

Habitat: Coasts, marshes, fresh and brackish wetlands.

Feeding: Mainly bivalve molluscs. Also worms, crabs and similar prey.

Breeding: The nest is a depression on the sand or stones. Incubation 24-35 days. Nestling period 28-35 days.
