Size: Between 21 cm (Least Grebe, Tachybaptus dominicus) and 74 cm (Clark's Grebe, Aechmophorus clarkii).

Distribution: All the continents, excepting Antarctica. Many migratory species, the most ecuatorial ones are resident.

Habitat: Aquatic ecosystems. Fresh ones for breeding, but some species Winter in coastal areas.

Feeding: Fish and aquatic arthropodes.

Breeding: Vegetal platform, in deep water it is floating and anchored to the surface vegetation. 2-7 eggs. Incubation 20-30 days. Nestling period 44-79 days.

Threat status: 5 threatened species (1 Critically Endangered, 2 Endangered and 2 Vulnerable).
