Distribution: All biogeographic regions.

Habitat: Usually forestal areas close to rivers, ponds or mangroves. Also forests far from water, coastal areas and desertic steppes.

Feeding: Fish, insects, molluscs, amphibians. Some species, even birds and mammals.

Breeding: Tunnel nest in an earth bank, termite mound or tree. Generally monogamous. 2-10 white eggs. Incubation 18-22 days. Nestling period 20-30 days.
