Distribution: All continents, salving Antarctica. The majority of the species are sedentary, being only a 10% of them truly migratory.

Habitat: Mainly forests and woodlands. Also open areas, pastures, savannas and tundra.

Feeding: Carnivorous. They mainly predate on small mammals. Also birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, molluscs and arthropodes.

Breeding: Cavities in trees, natural or built by other species. Hollows and cracks in rocks. Also vegetal platforms constructed by other birds. Even on the ground.
