Size: Between 8 cm (Buff-faced Pygmy-parrot, Micropsitta pusio) and 100 cm (Hyacinth Macaw, Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus).

Distribution: Neotropical, Afrotropical, Oriental and Australian regions. Only 2 species truly migratory. Most of them sedentary, performing local movements according to food availability.

Habitat: Forestal habitats, more or less dense, including savannas.

Feeding: Seeds, flowers and fruits. Subfamily Loriinae and some other punctual case feed on nectar.

Breeding: The nest is a large hole in a high tree (sometimes in cliffs, termite nests, large stick platforms or, rarely, on the ground). Monogamous. 1-8 white eggs. Incubation 17-35 days. Nestling period very variable, from 18 days to 19 weeks.
