Size: Between 9.5 cm (Magellanic Tapaculo, Scytalopus magellanicus and 23 cm (Chestnut-throated Huet-huet, Pteroptochos castaneus).

Distribution: Neotropical Region. All species resident.

Habitat: Most of the species, forestal. Other ones prefer scrub or bamboo.

Feeding: Mainly insects and spiders, also vegetal material.

Breeding: Natural cavities in trunks, banks or on the ground, where they accumulate moss, fibers and other vegetal materials. 2-4 eggs. Incubation 15-17 days. Nestling period 14-15 days.
