Size: Between 16 cm (Boehm's Bee-eater, Merops boehmi) and 35 cm (Blue-bearded Bee-eater, Nyctyornis athertoni).

Distribution: Palearctic, Afrotropical, Oriental and Australasian Regions. Tropical species are sedentary, but there are several migratory ones.

Habitat: Mainly open areas, savannas. Some forestal species.

Feeding: Aereal insects, the most frecuent ones are bees and wasps.

Breeding: Tunnel of around 3 m deep on a sand bank. 2-7 eggs. Incubation 18-23 days. Nesting period 27-32 days.

Threat status: No threatened species.
